The Western is making a comeback
Directed by: Ethan and Joel Coen
Written by: Ethan and Joel Coen, based on the novel by Charles Portis
Starring: Jeff Bridges, Hailee Steinfield, Matt Damon.
Just when we thought the legendary Western had seen all its good days in the past with Clint Eastwood and John Wayne, the Coen Brothers deliver us True Grit – one of the most exciting films to hit our screens.
While the Charles Portis novel has already been portrayed on film with John Wayne, the Coen Brothers brand their unmistakable sense of humour and eccentricity to the film so that True Grit feels like an original. But unlike their earlier films, True Grit sticks to genre – thereby limiting that fun sense of freedom and fluidity films like Fargo and A Serious Man had.
And while Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfield deliver brilliant performances that testify to the fact that 1. Bridges’ experience and age makes him that much cooler and 2. Hailee Steinfield is one to look out for in the future, Matt Damon feels a little out of place as a Texan ranger.
Riding drama, action, eccentric humour and interesting ideas around the price of revenge, True Grit does justice to the Western genre … even if Damon does suit the whole Bourne thing a little more than cowboy hats.
